Digital Office, San Francisco. The new Echo and Echo Dot speakers can now use ultrasound to detect occupancy in your home and turn other connected devices on and off like lights or a Fire TV. First observed at Amazon’s hardware fall event in September, The Verge reports, its fourth-generation Echo and Echo Dot speakers can now detect inaudible ultrasound to detect if people are in a room.

You can enable or disable this feature in the Alexa app, where you can also set occupancy actions to use this new capability, such as turning on lights when you enter a room and then turning them off when you leave the room.

You can also play Alexa for music or a radio station when motion is detected near your Echo during a specified period of time and then turn off the melodies after you leave. The function is listed under Motion Detection in the Alexa app settings for each compatible Echo device, and here you can toggle the ability on or off.

The speakers do not have cameras, so instead, the device detects motion by reflecting an inaudible ultrasonic wave that reflects off nearby objects before returning to the device’s microphone.
